Thai Massage is known for its work on energy lines, called Sen lines in Thailand, and for its many stretches that often resemble yoga moves. Most Asian bodywork is based on the concept that there is a system of energy lines in the body. If they are blocked, health problems develop.
How Do Meridians Work?
Thai Massage is based on the idea that the body is has up to 72,000 energy lines (or Sen lines) running through the body. These energy channels are similar to the Nadi in yoga, and the meridians in Chinese medicine and Shiatsu. Sen can be mapped throughout the body; they flow within the body and not on the surface. They exist in corresponding pairs and each sen line has many acupuncture points along its path.
Sen lines can be best understood as a process rather than a structure. The individual sen lines themselves are often described as ‘channels’ or even ‘vessels’ which reflects the notion of carrying, holding, or transporting qi, blood and body fluids around the body.
Energy flows through the sen lines accessing all party of the body. When a Sen line becomes blocked, the energy flow becomes inactive and the body loses its balance. This causes a person to feel discomfort or illness. Acupressure and stretching in Thai massage re-activates the energy flow and balances the energy lines.
